Coles Gun Shop has been building custom sub-gauges out of a small Indiana workshop for years, and the BR 240 is the flagship 28-gauge in their current lineup. We sat down with the gun for a long bench session and a longer day on a sporting course.

What you feel first is the wood. The select walnut on the test gun was the kind that gets attention at the loading rack, and the checkering had the depth that says someone's hands shaped it rather than a machine. The barrel work is the second thing, with the kind of forcing-cone geometry that makes a 28-gauge actually feel like a 28-gauge instead of a half-built 20.

The piece walks through the engineering choices, the option list, what the build process looks like when you order one, and the on-course behavior of an example out of the box.
